Books

Faculty book highlights!

Can inner 'fears' push people to do what's right? The great thinkers of Ancient Greece grappled with this essential question by exploring the 'appeals' that prevent wrongdoing. Delve into the understandings of what it means to have 'pangs of conscience' with Motivation in the Ancient Greek ethos by Andrei Zavaliy (professor of philosophy at AUK), which gives a timeline of various approaches leading to Aristotle's 'psychic discomfort' or 'moral guilt.'

This book will be part of the Library collection soon. Check this page again for updates on how to access the electronic or print version!

It can be difficult to remember that the ancient past was not a monolith, where entire civilizations agreed wholly on any major social or moral concepts. Acquaint yourself with such a conversation with Courage and cowardice in Ancient Greece by Andrei Zavaliy (professor of philosophy at AUK), which offers the first comprehensive account of the raging debate on true courage from the times of the immensely influential Homeric epics to the equally influential Aristotle.
