Terms and Definitions

Epidemic

A disease is an epidemic when it breaks out and rages in a community, only to subside afterward. (citation)

Outbreak

A series of cases of a disease which starts suddenly. (citation)

Pandemic

(adjective) Describing a widespread epidemic disease affecting large numbers of people in different countries simultaneously. The term should be reserved for human diseases; the equivalent term for animal diseases is panzootic. (citation)
